What's New in HAP v4.3

HAP v4.3 was released in March 2006. This section is intended for readers who are familiar with HAP v4.2, System Design Load v4.2 or earlier versions of these programs and are interested in learning about changes in HAP v4.3. Noteworthy changes are summarized below and are then described in more detail for the major functional areas of the program.

Key Changes:

* ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 data and calculations.
* Integration of Building Wizard features with HAP.
* Ability to import data from gbXML-format files.
* Enhanced features for importing chiller performance data.
* Updated data for the simulation weather library.
* A new feature for automatically archiving a project and e-mailing it to your sales engineers. This feature can be useful when collaborating with a sales engineer on equipment selections.

General

* Building Wizard Integration. The Building Wizard helps you quickly create spaces for a building using a "top-down" approach. It is useful for preliminary design and screening analyses. Originally, Building Wizard was released as a separate program in June, 2005. The Wizard features have now been integrated with HAP so you can launch the Wizard directly from within the HAP main window. A toolbar button and an option on the Edit Menu are provided for doing this.
* gbXML Import. A new option on the Project Menu allows you to import data from a file containing data in gbXML format. gbXML is becoming accepted as a neutral format for sharing building information between design tools such as CAD, Building Information Modeling (BIM), system design and system simulation programs. For example, starting with a CAD floor plan drawing, you can extract building information and save it in a gbXML file. HAP can then import the gbXML data to automatically generate spaces and other data. This transfer of electronic data replaces the traditional manual process of taking off data from drawings and entering it into HAP, thereby significantly increasing productivity.
* Auto-Archive and Email. A new option on the Project Menu automatically archives your project and e-mails it to your Carrier sales engineer. This feature can be useful when collaborating with your sales engineer for equipment selections.
* Converting Projects from Prior Versions of HAP. HAP v4.3 is able to convert data in projects created by HAP v3.2, v4.0, v4.1 and v4.2 into a format usable by v4.3. This is a normal extension of the conversion features offered in previous versions. Data from a prior HAP v4.x version can be converted from an active project or an archive file. For HAP v3.2, only data in an active project can be converted.

Spaces

* ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 Data. Space usage types and ventilation airflow defaults for ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 have been added. When starting a project you can choose between ASHRAE Std 62-2001, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004 and User-Defined as the basis for ventilation defaults. This choice is made via the Preferences option on the View Menu. For example, if you choose ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004, the Space Usage drop-down list in space inputs will contain space usage types from that edition of the standard. Outdoor ventilation air requirements for the space will be properly defaulted based on the space usage you select.

Systems

* ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 Calculations. Procedures for calculating outdoor air ventilation airflow based on ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 have been added. This increases the choices for ventilation sizing method from 3 to 4:
o Sum of OA Airflows
o ASHRAE Std 62-2001
o ASHRAE Std 62-2001 (max only)
o ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004
* When you start a project you can choose between ASHRAE Std 62-2001, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004 and User-Defined as the basis for ventilation defaults. This choice is made via the Preferences option on the View Menu. This choice governs both the ventilation defaults in space inputs and your choices for ventilation calculation method in air system inputs. For example if you choose ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004 as the basis for ventilation defaults, system inputs will offer "Sum of OA Airflows" and "ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004" as choices for the ventilation sizing method.
The ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004 ventilation sizing algorithm uses procedures from the Ventilation Rate Procedure from section 6.2 and Appendix A of the Standard.
* Ventilation Sizing Summary Upgrade. The Ventilation Sizing Summary Report has been upgraded. It now uses three different formats depending on whether ASHRAE Std 62-2001, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2004 or Sum of OA Airflows is chosen as the ventilation sizing method.

Plants

* Ability to Exclude of Pump kWh from Analysis. It is now possible to exclude pump kWh from an energy analysis by setting the pump head to zero ft wg or zero kPa. User's sometimes wish to do this to simplify analysis results.

Chillers

* Import Chiller Feature. The Chiller Import feature was upgraded to accept data in a new format. This new format allows larger, more detailed part-load performance maps to be accepted from Carrier E-CAT chiller selection programs. One initial benefit is the ability to import chiller performance data from the Packaged Chiller Builder E-CAT program for Carrier Aquasnap air-cooled packaged scroll chillers and Carrier AquaForce air-cooled packaged screw chillers. Chiller data files for specific chiller selections can be obtained from your Carrier sales engineer.
* Adjustments in Air-Cooled Chiller Modeling. The modeling of air-cooled chiller part-load performance was streamlined to make it more flexible and easier to use. Previously, the program required the performance map always extend down to 0 F or -17.8 C OAT to ensure that performance data was available for any possible operating condition encountered. Often it is difficult to obtain chiller performance data for cold OAT values so this made modeling difficult. HAP v4.3 removes this restriction. If cooling duty is required during an energy simulation for OAT conditions below the range of performance data you defined, the program will automatically extend your data to allow the simulation to continue. The data extension is done assuming the chiller is operating in the head pressure control region and therefore has constant efficiency.

Weather Data

* Upgrade to Simulation Weather Library. In HAP v4.3 the library of simulation weather data has been upgraded. This is the weather data used for energy simulations. TMY2 data for the United States and ASHRAE IWEC data for international sites was used to replace data for many of the existing cities in the library and add data for new cities. Overall the number of cities in the library increased from 405 to 508.
o TMY2 Data. Data for cities in the United States has been updated using Typical Meteorological Year 2 (TMY2) data from US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). TMY2 data is derived from weather observations for the period 1960-1990. It replaces the original TMY data that had been used in the simulation library. This new data replaced many of the existing cities in the library. Original TMY data has only been retained for those cities for which new TMY2 data is not available. In the weather data file names the source of the data is now indicated. For example USA_ILLINOIS_CHICAGO_TMY2.HW1 contains TMY2 data for Chicago. With this upgrade, the number of US cities in the library has increased from 189 to 242. A list of cities is provided in Table 1 below.
o ASHRAE IWEC Data. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has generously granted Carrier license to distribute data from the ASHRAE International Weather for Energy Calculations (IWEC) library. IWEC data for 133 cities outside the US and Canada was used to update the HAP library. 83 of the IWEC cities replaced existing cities in the library, and 50 new cities were added. A list of cities is provided in Table 2 below. Among the data replaced were cities having simplified average data. For those cities this upgrade provides actual weather data instead of synthetic data for the first time. In the weather data file names, the source of the data is now indicated. For example, AUSTRALIA_SYDNEY_ASHRAE_IWEC.HW1 contains data for Sydney and its source is the ASHRAE IWEC library.
* Upgrade to Design Weather Data. Default design weather data for 47 new cities was added to the program. These additions were made so that every city in the simulation weather library had a corresponding entry in the default design weather database. Of these new cities, 28 are in the United States, 5 are in Central and South America, 8 are in Europe and 6 are in Asia. A list of these cities is shown in the table below.
